What exactly is an emergency watch and how does it work?

Emergency watches easily explained

Digital assistants are now firmly anchored in our everyday life. However, the new technologies not only enable younger, but now also older generations to enjoy a higher standard of living. The latter benefit from AAL (active & assisted living) -focused software and user-friendly smart devices. Active assisted living systems such as JAMES support seniors with everyday tasks, create trust in new technologies and even save lives in an emergency. At the same time, they facilitate the care routine of concerned relatives and professional care organizations.

What?

Emergency watches are often also referred to as safety watches or alarm bands. In most cases, however, this refers to similarly structured mobile devices with the same goal: To reliably protect your wearer in everyday life and to get help if necessary.

Although many seniors already have a mobile phone or smartphone, it is not always at hand and is often forgotten at home when going out. Accordingly, a person seeking help is often not able to make the emergency call.

SOS watches offer the solution. The new models are worn on the wrist and look like modern smartwatches. In addition, they offer their wearers pleasant wearing comfort. Most watches have an emergency button and precise GPS location. This is how you protect yourself in the best possible way On the way .

Why?

Many people share the desire to live in their own four walls for as long as possible. Older people in particular have a strong bond with their own home. In earlier times, several generations of living together were commonplace. In addition to father, mother and children, the grandparents also lived under the same roof. However, demographic change and the ongoing trend towards small apartments and single households brought the earlier family structures to a collapse. Currently every third person in the age group 65+ lives alone. * This increases both the need for attention from relatives to their loved ones and the demand for nursing staff.

Safety, Health & Community

Everyone wants their older family members to have a life of safety, health and community. Freedom and self-determination must not be disregarded when fulfilling these core elements, especially since these are an essential part of maintaining the accustomed quality of life of older people.

SMARTWATCHES, which, apart from their stylish looks, have life-saving functions such as emergency buttons, fall sensors, GPS, health applications, etc., are very important in this context.

As?

Help is just a push of a button away

Most emergency watches have at least one emergency button. In newer designs, this is often discreetly placed and can be easily triggered: Simply press the red button for about three seconds to send an SOS ( JAMES emergency watch S6 ). In addition to the alarm function, many models integrate GPS tracking systems, which locate the position of the watch wearer in an emergency and send it to their relatives, emergency call center or care organization via APP / SMS / WEBPORTAL. This enables authorized helpers to quickly locate and rescue the affected person.

In addition to active calls for help, some models also enable inactivity sensors, which prove to be lifesavers, especially in the event of an accident or falls. The fall sensors recognize unusual periods of rest of the watch wearer and automatically sound the alarm in the event of prolonged immobility. With the help of the technology, horror scenarios such as waiting hours for help or finding the person concerned too late can be prevented. In addition to active calls for help, some models also allow passive, i.e. automatic alarm signals.

Runaway protection for people with mild dementia

Despite their illness, people with mild dementia long to live longer in their own home and at the same time retain the freedom they are used to. Emergency watches with integrated Geofece software allow affected persons to have their Rhythm of life maintain. The runaway protection secures dementia sufferers with the help of an invisible protective field, which can be individually adapted. For example, a movement zone of approx. 300 meters around the place of residence of the watch wearer is defined. When crossing this zone, the watch sends an automatic SOS incl. GPS position to authorized helpers.

Which?

Finding out which emergency watch is right for you or your loved one is often not that easy. Before making a decision, it is important to think about the individual needs of the watch wearer:

What about his lifestyle? Does he live alone? Should the watch be waterproof? Does he like to go for a walk, is he at risk of falling or is he already having a tendency to run away ** due to dementia?

As soon as you are clear about the needs of the future wearer, it will be all the easier for you to decide on a model.

** Definition of the term “towards-running tendency”: The towards-running tendency was formerly known as running-away tendency – because those affected follow an inner urge and run away. It is now known, however, that patients do not just “want to flee”, but rather set off with a goal.
